Ramsbottom is a market town in the Borough of Bury, about four miles north-west of Bury in the Irwell valley, with the Peel Monument looking down from Holcombe Moor. We pick up across the town and its villages, from Summerseat and Holcombe Brook to Shuttleworth, and out to Edenfield just over the Lancashire border. The 19th-century industrialists William and Daniel Grant, who were based here, are said to have inspired the Cheeryble brothers in Dickens’s Nicholas Nickleby.
Ramsbottom has the M66 on its doorstep, and your driver takes it south past Bury to the M60. From there it is whichever side of the M60 is moving better, via Stockport or via the Trafford Centre, to reach the M56 and junction 5.
Typical journey time: around 45 to 60 minutes, depending on traffic and the time of day.
