Manchester to Birmingham Taxi — Where in Birmingham Are You Going?

Manchester to Birmingham is 85 miles by the most direct route. What sounds like a simple A-to-B is, in practice, a journey with real decision points — about which road to take through the West Midlands, about the M6 Toll, about whether Birmingham city centre, the NEC, or Birmingham Airport are actually the same destination (they are not, and the approach to each is completely different). Airport Trips handles all of it. Fixed fare. Door to door. Your driver knows the route, knows the Toll decision, and knows which part of Birmingham you are heading to. Tell us exactly where you are going — and we will get you there.

Destination Guide

Birmingham Is Not One Destination — It Is Several

This is the question that matters before anything else. Birmingham is the UK’s second city, and its key destinations are spread across a wide area. A taxi to “Birmingham” means very different things depending on your purpose.

Birmingham City Centre

The commercial and cultural core — Broad Street, Brindleyplace, Colmore Row, the Bullring, Digbeth. Your driver approaches via the A38(M) Aston Expressway from Junction 6 of the M6 (Spaghetti Junction), or via the M42/A38, depending on your specific address. City centre drop-off adds approximately 15–20 minutes to the motorway journey time, depending on traffic within the ring road.

Best for: Business meetings in the CBD, hotel check-ins, restaurants, conference venues at the ICC or Arena Birmingham, visits to Aston University or the University of Birmingham.
NEC — National Exhibition Centre

The NEC sits 8 miles east of Birmingham city centre, directly adjacent to Birmingham Airport and Birmingham International railway station at Junction 6 of the M42. It is one of the UK’s largest exhibition and event venues. If you are attending a trade show, exhibition, or large-scale event, your drop-off is the NEC — not Birmingham city centre, which is a 30-minute drive away in traffic.

Best for: Trade exhibitions, consumer events, concerts at Resorts World Arena, Crufts, the Caravan Show, the Birmingham Motor Show, and hundreds of events.
Birmingham Airport (BHX)

Birmingham Airport is adjacent to the NEC at Junction 6 of the M42, approximately 8 miles east of the city centre. If you are connecting to an international flight from Birmingham, your transfer ends here — not in the city. We drop directly at the terminal entrance. Birmingham Airport serves over 150 destinations across Europe, North America, and long-haul routes via the Middle East.

Best for: Passengers flying from BHX, including those who cannot find direct flights from Manchester and choose to transfer to Birmingham for international connections.
Solihull, Edgbaston & Business Parks

Birmingham’s commercial geography extends well beyond the city centre ring road. Major business parks — Birmingham Business Park (Junction 6, M42), Blythe Valley Park (Solihull), the HSBC UK HQ (Centenary Square), and KPMG/Deloitte offices in Colmore Row — each sit in distinct locations requiring different approach routes. Edgbaston is home to the University and the cricket ground.

Best for: Corporate transfers, site visits, multi-location business days, and transfers to Solihull towns southeast of the city.

Tell us your destination — address, venue, or postcode — when you book, and we plan the most efficient approach accordingly.

Route Overview

The Route: Manchester to Birmingham

The standard route from Manchester to Birmingham follows the M56 south from Manchester Airport, joins the M6 southbound through Cheshire and Staffordshire, and approaches Birmingham via the network of motorway junctions around the West Midlands.

Journey Specifications
Approximate Distance 85–95 miles, depending on your Manchester pickup and Birmingham destination.
Typical Journey Time 1 hour 30 minutes to 2 hours in normal traffic conditions.
Peak Congestion M6 between Junctions 10–6 during weekday rush hours (07:00–09:00 and 16:30–18:30).

The M6 Toll — Should Your Driver Use It?

Understanding route efficiency on your transfer

The M6 Toll is a 27-mile private toll motorway that runs parallel to the M6 between Junction 3A (near Coventry) and Junction 11A (north of Cannock), bypassing the most consistently congested section of the M6 around Birmingham. It bypasses Spaghetti Junction entirely. The full-route toll for a private vehicle is fully integrated into our service architecture.

When the Toll is worth using:

During weekday peak hours — particularly the evening rush between 16:00 and 19:00, and the morning rush between 07:30 and 09:30 — the M6 through Birmingham can add 30–60 minutes to the journey. The Toll typically saves that time in full and is absolutely the right call on a peak-hour run.

When the Toll is less valuable:

Early mornings, late evenings, weekends, and bank holidays when the main M6 flows freely. On a Sunday morning or at midnight, the Toll saves very little time.

Your Airport Trips driver makes this decision in real time based on live traffic data. If it makes sense to use the Toll, we use it. The toll cost is completely included in your fare — no surprise charges added afterwards.
